The Providence space station is not a place for traditional cover shooters. PlatinumGames and Shinji Mikami designed Vanquish as a kinetic puzzle where standing still is a death sentence. Against the colossal war machines of the Order of the Russian Star, brute force means nothing without momentum. This field manual deconstructs the primary bosses of the campaign, offering precise tactical analysis to dismantle them piece by heavy-metal piece.

The ARS Combat Principles

Before engaging high-value targets, you must master the fundamental operational rules of Sam Gideon's Augmented Reaction Suit (ARS).

  • Thermodynamic Discipline: Your suit’s energy gauge is your lifeline. Boosting and using Augmented Reaction (AR) mode drain this meter. If you overheat, you become a sitting duck. Always cancel your slides or exit AR mode just before the gauge hits the red line to allow for a rapid cooldown.
  • Weaponize Your Mobility: Concrete barriers will be shredded by enemy fire in seconds. Use cover only to catch your breath or reload. Your primary defense is the power-slide. Flank constantly.
  • The Tactical Cigarette: Tossing a lit cigarette from behind cover will draw enemy fire and boss aggro for a few crucial seconds. Use this window to reposition or line up a devastating shot.
  • Precision Over Spray: Bosses in Vanquish are heavily armored. Firing blindly at their chassis wastes ammunition. You must identify and target glowing weak points to trigger structural damage and QTE (Quick Time Event) execution phases.

Boss Technical Sheets

1. Argus Robot

  • Codename: Grand Assault Tactical Mech "Argus"
  • Attack Patterns: The Argus initially operates in a quadrupedal mode, firing salvos of homing missiles and using devastating melee stomps if you get too close. Once heavily damaged, it transforms into a bipedal configuration, deploying a massive chest-mounted particle cannon and sweeping lasers.
  • Recommended Weapons: Assault Rifle (for sustained joint damage), Rocket Launcher (for burst damage on exposed cores), EMP Grenades.
  • Weak Points: The glowing yellow joints on its legs and arms. In its bipedal form, its primary weakness is the glowing red core on its chest and its head.
  • Tactical Approach: Do not stay directly in front of the Argus. Boost-slide in wide circles to avoid its missile swarms. Focus your fire on its leg joints to cripple it. When it falls, manually trigger AR mode to unload your Rocket Launcher into its exposed core. In its bipedal phase, when it charges its chest laser, wait until the last possible second, toss an EMP grenade to stun it, and shatter the core.

2. KNRB-0 Buzzard

  • Codename: Airborne Fortress "Buzzard"
  • Attack Patterns: This heavily armored gunship rains death from above. It utilizes carpet bombing runs, dual rotary machine guns, and deploys smaller automated drones to flank your position. It will frequently change altitude to break your line of sight.
  • Recommended Weapons: Lock-on Laser (to clear drones), Sniper Rifle, Heavy Machine Gun.
  • Weak Points: The two weapon pods mounted on its sides, the rear thrusters, and ultimately, the pilot's canopy at the front.
  • Tactical Approach: Cover is useless here, as the Buzzard will destroy it from above. Use your Lock-on Laser to quickly clear the skies of nuisance drones. When the Buzzard banks for a strafing run, slide sideways, enter AR mode, and use the Sniper Rifle to surgically destroy its weapon mounts. Once grounded or hovering low, pour Heavy Machine Gun fire directly into the front cockpit.

3. Crystal Viper

  • Codename: Stealth Close-Quarters Mech "Crystal Viper"
  • Attack Patterns: Unlike the massive artillery platforms, the Crystal Viper is agile and uses active optical camouflage. It stalks you, teleports, and attacks with a high-frequency energy blade that can instantly kill you. It also rips chunks of the environment to hurl at you from a distance.
  • Recommended Weapons: Shotgun, LFE Gun (Low-Frequency Emitter), EMP Grenades.
  • Weak Points: Its visor and its back exhaust vents, which are exposed for a split second after it performs a heavy melee lunge.
  • Tactical Approach: Paranoia is your best defense. Watch the environment for visual distortions indicating its cloaked position. The Shotgun and LFE Gun are perfect here, as they do not require pinpoint accuracy and will stagger the Viper, forcing it to decloak. Let it come to you. When it dashes in for a sword strike, dodge backwards, trigger AR mode, and blast it at point-blank range with the Shotgun.

4. The Bogey

  • Codename: High-Mobility Battlesuit "Bogey" (Alpha and Bravo)
  • Attack Patterns: The Bogey is the Russian equivalent of the ARS suit. It matches your speed, utilizes its own bullet-time, and wields a sniper rifle, homing EMP traps, and sweeping laser attacks. It constantly flies around the arena, making it the hardest target to track.
  • Recommended Weapons: Heavy Machine Gun, Lock-on Laser, Assault Rifle.
  • Weak Points: The head, and the suit's heat sinks, which glow brightly right after the Bogey performs a heavy attack or dashes extensively.
  • Tactical Approach: This is a mirror match. You cannot outrun the Bogey; you must outsmart it. Use cover to block its sniper laser, but be ready to slide out immediately when it fires EMP traps. Wait for the Bogey to exhaust its own energy after a long flight path or a missed melee attack. Enter AR mode during these brief vulnerability windows and aim strictly for the head.

The Ultimate Test: Higher Difficulties

While standard difficulties offer a balanced challenge, Vanquish entirely changes its identity on "God Hard" mode (unlocked after completing the campaign). This difficulty is renowned in the action gaming community as one of the most grueling tests of reflexes ever coded.

On God Hard, the rules change fundamentally. The ARS suit's automatic safety feature—which automatically triggers AR mode when your health drops to critical levels—is completely disabled. If you take a heavy hit, you die instantly. Furthermore, weapon upgrade drops are significantly reduced, enemy accuracy is practically flawless, and your suit overheats much faster.

The most notorious roadblock on this difficulty is the final encounter against two Bogeys simultaneously. Surviving this fight requires absolute mechanical perfection: you must manage your suit's heat down to the millisecond, flawlessly juggle EMP grenades to keep one Bogey stunned while damaging the other, and maintain a constant, flawless slide-dodge rhythm. It transforms Vanquish from a frantic shooter into an unforgiving, high-speed ballet of death where only true mastery of the ARS suit will see you through.
