In Gears Tactics, playing defensively behind a waist-high wall is the fastest way to get your squad wiped out. You must exploit the Action Point (AP) economy through relentless aggression to turn every round into a coordinated massacre.
Combat Philosophy: The Rule of Constant Aggression
The 3-AP Economy: You have three Action Points per turn to spend however you want. Firing three times, moving three times, or setting up complex Overwatch zones breaks the rigid restrictions of traditional tactical games.
The Execution Engine: When a Locust is downed, finishing them with a melee execution (Lancer chainsaw or Retro charge) instantly grants +1 AP to every other squad member. Plan your turns so one soldier's executions finance the rest of the squad's attacks.
Active Reloads: Manually timing an active reload grants a significant damage buff. Never waste an AP on a standard reload if an active reload is available.
First Steps and Squad Management
Heroes vs. Recruits: Main characters (Gabe, Sid, Mikayla) cause an instant Game Over if they die. Generic recruits are expendable. Rotate your roster constantly so you don't end up fielding under-leveled troops during mandatory side missions.
Mid-Mission Loot: Pick up supply cases scattered across the map. They contain weapon mods and legendary armor pieces that drastically alter your base stats.
Closing E-Holes: Keep frag grenades equipped and off cooldown. Tossing a frag into an Emergence Hole instantly seals it, stopping enemy reinforcements from flooding the map.
Combat Classes and Essential Skills
Vanguard (e.g., Sid): Frontline tank and disruptor.
Key Skill:Intimidate (flushes enemies out of cover and instantly breaks their Overwatch).
Support (e.g., Gabe): AP distributor and combat medic.
Key Skill:Empower (transfers AP to allies) and group-healing execution buffs.
Scout: Flanker and close-quarters assassin.
Key Skill:Cloak (grants invisibility for point-blank Gnasher blasts) and Proximity Mines.
Sniper (e.g., Mikayla): Long-range critical hit specialist.
Key Skill:Chain Shot (refunds the spent AP upon landing a critical hit or kill).
Heavy: Perimeter defense and suppression.
Key Skill:Anchored (stacks massive damage and accuracy buffs as long as the unit remains stationary with the Mulcher).
Advanced Field Tactics
Disabling Overwatch: Never run a unit through an active enemy Overwatch cone. Use abilities like Intimidate or Disabling Shot to break their stance before advancing.
Tickers: Shoot them from a distance to trigger chain explosions that shred adjacent Locust troops.
Wretches: Set up wide, overlapping Overwatch cones with shotguns or Mulchers to intercept their mass melee charges.
Kantus: Eliminate them immediately. They buff Locust resilience and will revive downed enemies.
Boomers & Theron Guards: Flank them with cloaked Scouts or strip their heavy armor using long-range Sniper fire from high ground.
Colossal Boss Guide
The Brumak
Mechanics: Dorsal rocket launchers, front-facing machine guns, and AOE stomps.
Strategy: Destroy the Imulsion tanks on its legs first to cripple its mobility. Focus fire on its shoulder cannons next, and dedicate one unit to quickly plugging any flanking E-Holes.
The Corpser
Mechanics: Invulnerable armored legs, telegraphed AOE strikes, and swarm summons.
Strategy: Force the boss to raise its legs by hitting it from the rear or waiting for it to wind up an AOE attack. Fire into its exposed head when its guard drops, ensuring your units stay completely out of the red danger zones.
The Hydra (Ukkon)
Mechanics: Massive aerial mobility, heavy turrets, toxic bombardments, and regeneration.
Strategy: Destroy the side turrets to eliminate its suppression fire. Keep your squad spread out to minimize toxic gas damage. Coordinate AP transfer skills from your Support units to empty full magazines into the head's weak points.
Tactical Commander's Checklist
Situation / Threat
Common Mistake
Recommended Tactical Solution
Locust Enemy Downed
Finishing them off with ranged gunfire
Execute them in melee to gift +1 AP to the rest of the squad.
Enemy in Overwatch
Running cover-to-cover anyway
Cast Intimidate (Vanguard) or Disabling Shot to break the stance.
E-Hole Opens
Waiting for enemies to spawn
Toss a Frag Grenade on turn 1 to seal it permanently.
Multiple Wretches Charging
Retreating backward
Set a wide Overwatch cone with a Heavy or Scout to shred them mid-run.
The Lancer's chainsaw is your greatest asset in Gears Tactics. Stay mobile, chain those executions, and never give the Horde time to set up their defenses.
