The Skull System in Halo Wars

In Halo Wars: Definitive Edition, Skulls do not simply spawn on the map from the start of a mission. To unlock a Skull, you must follow the Two-Step Golden Rule:

1. Complete the Bonus/Optional Objective: Each campaign mission features a specific kill count or destruction target (e.g., kill 100 Grunts, destroy 10 Scarab nodes).
2. Retrieve the Skull: Once the game notifies you that the Skull has spawned, you must send a unit over to physically pick it up off the ground before ending the mission.

Tip: Always use a fast, nimble unit like a Warthog or Ghost to rush the Skull's spawn point immediately after the objective notification pops up.

Step-by-Step Skull Locations (Missions 1 – 15)

Mission 1: Alpha Base

• Skull Name: Look at that Juice
• Required Objective: Kill 100 Grunts.
• Location: At the base of the Covenant ramp/structure located to the north of the main enemy encampment.
• Effect: Leader abilities cool down twice as fast (-0.25x Score Multiplier).

Mission 2: Relic Approach

• Skull Name: Paint it Black
• Required Objective: Kill 20 Jackals.
• Location: Inside the northern Covenant base, right next to the entrance of the Relic structure.
• Effect: All active camouflage units gain a significant duration boost (+0.25x Score Multiplier).

Mission 3: Relic Interior

• Skull Name: Fog
• Required Objective: Kill 5 Locusts.
• Location: In the center-east portion of the map, resting near the edge of a small crater/swamp area.
• Effect: Disables the Minimap completely (+0.25x Score Multiplier).

Mission 4: Arcadia Suburbs

• Skull Name: Sickness
• Required Objective: Kill 50 Banshees.
• Location: In the rear of the northern Covenant base, sitting directly on the transport pad.
• Effect: Reduces maximum hit points for all player units by 50% (+0.25x Score Multiplier).

Mission 5: Arcadia City

• Skull Name: Rebel Sympathy
• Required Objective: Kill 5 Wraith tanks.
• Location: On top of the highway overpass near the central civilian evacuation dome.
• Effect: Non-player units receive 50% more hit points (+0.25x Score Multiplier).

Mission 6: Dome of Light

• Skull Name: Rebel Leader
• Required Objective: Kill 50 Vampire aircraft.
• Location: Positioned behind the Covenant base on the far eastern edge of the map, near the barrier dome.
• Effect: Donated units drop a plasma bomb upon death (+0.25x Score Multiplier).

Mission 7: Scarab

• Skull Name: Catch
• Required Objective: Kill 10 Scarab power nodes.
• Location: In a small alcove directly behind the central Scarab platform.
• Effect: Enemy units double their special ability usage (+0.25x Score Multiplier).

Mission 8: Anders' Signal

• Skull Name: Sugar Cookies
• Required Objective: Kill 100 Sentinel units.
• Location: Tucked inside a cliff gap on the northern plateau, near the Sentinel spawning structure.
• Effect: Player units receive 50% hit point boost (-0.25x Score Multiplier).

Mission 9: The Cleansing

• Skull Name: Boomstick
• Required Objective: Kill 50 Flood Stalkers.
• Location: On the far eastern hull section of the Spirit of Fire.
• Effect: 5% chance of killed enemy units exploding (+0.25x Score Multiplier).

Mission 10: Shield World

• Skull Name: Secret Sauce
• Required Objective: Kill 350 Flood units.
• Location: Near the northern corner of the map, adjacent to an air transport pad.
• Effect: Player units gain bonus damage when their health drops low (-0.25x Score Multiplier).

Mission 11: Cleansing of Habitat

• Skull Name: Emperor
• Required Objective: Kill 100 Hunters.
• Location: Sitting on a raised ledge near the main Covenant base on the eastern side of the map.
• Effect: Leader abilities recharge twice as fast (-0.25x Score Multiplier).

Mission 12: Repairs

• Skull Name: Pain Train
• Required Objective: Kill 20 Spirit dropships.
• Location: On the far edge of the hull platform near the engine repair node.

• Skull Name: Banger
• Required Objective: Kill 10 Flood Spore Towers.
• Location: Near the second node site on the left side of the canyon path.

Mission 14: Reactor

• Skull Name: Never Forget
• Required Objective: Kill 20 Flood Formations.
• Location: Located along the high narrow ledge near the secondary reactor site.
• Effect: Player units explode upon death (+0.25x Score Multiplier).

Mission 15: Escape

• Skull Name: We're in Business
• Required Objective: Kill 3 Wraith tanks.
• Location: On a high platform next to the core control console near the evacuation pad.
• Effect: Supply pads generate resources twice as fast (-0.25x Score Multiplier).

Quick Reference Checklist

Unlocking the "Skull Hunter" Achievement

To permanently save a Skull to your profile and count toward the Skull Hunter achievement, you must finish the mission after picking up the Skull. Quitting to the main menu immediately after grabbing it will lose your progress.

Once unlocked, activate debuff skulls during Legendary campaign runs to skyrocket your end-game score leaderboards!
