While Death Stranding Director’s Cut is primarily a game about logistics, connection, and delivery, the ruined world you are traversing is far from empty. Between the ghostly entities haunting the rain and the rogue factions hunting for cargo, Sam Porter Bridges will inevitably have to fight. Understanding your enemies, picking the right weapons, and carrying the correct survival gear is the difference between a successful delivery and a catastrophic crater.

Here is your complete guide to the combat and survival mechanics of Death Stranding.

Enemy Types and Combat Strategies

The threats in Death Stranding are divided into two main categories: the living and the dead. You must approach each with completely different tactics.

The Living: MULEs and Terrorists

  • MULEs: These are cargo-obsessed bandits. They do not want to kill you; they just want to knock you out and steal your packages. They use scanner poles to detect your cargo and will chase you in trucks or on foot wielding electrified spears.
    • The Strategy: Stealth is your best friend. Hide in tall grass, use the tall grass to flank them, and take them down silently from behind. If a firefight breaks out, use the Maser Gun or the Bola Gun to incapacitate them quickly. If you are surrounded, drop your cargo (so it doesn't get damaged) and use melee combos or throw stray briefcases at their heads.
  • Terrorists (Demens): Unlike MULEs, Terrorists use live ammunition and actively want to kill you.
    • The Strategy: DO NOT KILL THEM. In the lore of Death Stranding, a dead body will eventually go "necro" and trigger a massive nuclear-level explosion known as a Voidout, resulting in a game over. You must fight Terrorists using strictly non-lethal weapons (rubber bullets, stun grenades). Equip Armor Plates to your shoulders and legs to survive their gunfire, and always stay behind cover.

The Dead: BTs (Beached Things)

  • Gazers (Floating BTs): These are the invisible, floating ghosts you encounter when the Timefall (black rain) starts.
    • The Strategy: Do not panic. Crouch and move slowly. Your Odradek scanner will point in the direction of the nearest BT and spin faster as you get closer. When you are very close, hold your breath (R1) to sneak past them. If you need to clear a path, hit them directly with a Hematic Grenade or cut their umbilical cord (unlocked later in the story).
  • Catchers (Boss BTs): If the Gazers hear you, they will drag you into the tar, summoning a massive, animalistic Catcher (like a giant squid or lion).
    • The Strategy: The environment will sink into a lake of black tar, but buildings and rocks will rise up. Stay elevated on these floating debris to maintain your mobility. Spam them with Hematic weapons. A great pro-tip: If you throw a Hematic Grenade at a Catcher, it will leave a cloud of red blood. If you shoot standard, lethal bullets through that blood cloud, they will deal massive damage to the BT.

The Arsenal: Your Best Weapons

Sam is a delivery man, but the UCA equips him with highly specialized gear to handle the apocalypse.

  • The Strand (Rope): Your default weapon. It takes no inventory space. You can use it to sneak up behind human enemies and silently tie them up. During melee combat, holding the Strand up allows you to parry enemy melee attacks in slow motion and instantly counter-attack.
  • The Bola Gun: The best anti-human weapon in the early-to-mid game. It shoots a wire that instantly wraps up MULEs and Terrorists. (Note: You must walk up to human enemies and kick them after they fall to fully knock them out, otherwise they will eventually break free).
  • Hematic Grenades: Crafted using Sam's own blood. These are absolutely essential for BT territory. A direct hit will instantly banish a standard Gazer.
  • Non-Lethal Assault Rifle: Fires rubber bullets. This is your go-to weapon for clearing out Terrorist camps. Aim for the head to put them to sleep instantly.
  • The Maser Gun (Director's Cut Exclusive): A fantastic early-game weapon that fires a continuous arc of electricity, instantly stunning MULEs without requiring precise aim.

Sourcing the Best Consumables

Having the right weapons means nothing if your health, stamina, and cargo are depleted. Managing your consumables is key to survival.

  • Blood Bags (Your True Health Bar):
    • What they do: Because anti-BT weapons use Sam's blood as ammo, and because blood acts as your health bar, running out of blood is a death sentence. Blood bags automatically refill your health and provide ammo for Hematic weapons.
    • How to get them: Always craft at least 3-4 Blood Bags at any delivery terminal before a long journey. Keep them stored in your Utility Pouch (which frees up space on your back).
  • Cryptobiotes:
    • What they do: These little floating bugs instantly restore a large chunk of your blood/health without needing an IV drip. They are your emergency healing items during boss fights.
    • How to get them: Look for large, pink, coral-like structures out in the open world. Approach them and grab the flying bugs. Always keep your Cryptobiote pouch full.
  • Container Repair Spray:
    • What it does: Timefall rain degrades the containers holding your cargo. If the container breaks, the cargo inside will take massive damage from a single fall. Repair spray instantly restores the container's health.
    • How to get it: Craft it at terminals or find it in postboxes. Always carry at least one can. (Note: Spraying it does not fix the item inside, only the protective casing).
  • The Canteen (Energy Drink / Water):
    • What it does: Restores your stamina gauge. If your stamina drops, Sam will trip constantly and move sluggishly.
    • How to get it: Your canteen automatically refills whenever you wade into a deep river or stand out in the Timefall rain. Make sure to drink from it (press Left on the D-pad to select it) whenever your stamina bar turns light blue. You can also boost your maximum stamina temporarily by drinking the Monster Energy/Timefall Porter in your Private Room before leaving a facility.

Master your stealth against the living, harness your blood against the dead, and always keep your pouches stocked. Good luck out there, Porter.
